LHH INTERNATIONAL
Local history. Global perspectives. Shared learning.
Every place has a history worth exploring. Across the world, teachers, researchers, heritage organisations and communities are finding ways to connect young people with the histories of the places they call home.
LHH International is an emerging initiative from Local History Hub, a UK-based, teacher-led social enterprise working to strengthen local history education, connections to place and a sense of belonging.
Our ambition is to bring together international perspectives, research and practical experience to explore what we can learn from one another.
-
Local history is rooted in particular places, but many of the opportunities and challenges surrounding its teaching are shared across borders.
How do different countries approach local history in their schools? How can museums, archives and community organisations support meaningful learning? What does research tell us about the relationship between place, identity and belonging?
We believe there is enormous value in bringing these conversations together.
By connecting educators, researchers and heritage professionals internationally, we hope to identify, exchange and share approaches that can inform and strengthen local history education.
-
LHH International will develop gradually, beginning with relationships and opportunities for knowledge exchange.
2026–27 | Building connections
Our first priority is to establish an international network of interested individuals and organisations.
We are particularly keen to connect with academics researching local history, place-based education, heritage education, identity and belonging, alongside teachers and heritage professionals with relevant practical experience.
During this initial stage, we will focus on developing relationships, identifying research and learning about effective practice internationally.
2027–28 | International working parties
Subject to interest and capacity, we hope to introduce occasional online working-party sessions.
These collaborative discussions will provide opportunities to explore research, compare approaches, share experiences and consider how learning from different countries might inform practice.
2028–29 | Sharing international practice
As relationships develop, we hope to continue these conversations and explore an online international showcase.
This could provide opportunities for participants to present research, share practical examples and highlight approaches to local history and place-based learning from around the world.
Our plans will evolve in response to the interests and contributions of the emerging network.

We welcome expressions of interest from:
Academics and researchers working in history education, heritage education, place-based learning, identity or belonging.
Teachers, school leaders and education professionals interested in local history.
Museum, archive and heritage professionals working with schools and communities.
Universities, research centres, educational networks and relevant organisations.
Others with experience or expertise that could contribute to international knowledge exchange.
You do not need to have an established relationship with Local History Hub or be based in the United Kingdom.
We are especially interested in hearing from people who can share relevant research, practical experience or examples of effective approaches.
-
LHH International welcomes interest from individuals and organisations around the world.
Online meetings and working-party discussions will be conducted in English. Participants will therefore need to be comfortable contributing in English or arrange for a translator or interpreter to support their participation.
Where practical, we will explore providing translated written information and materials to help make international participation more accessible.
-
We are currently at an early stage of development and would love to hear from people interested in contributing to this emerging network.
Whether you are a researcher exploring the relationship between place and identity, a teacher developing locally rooted learning or a heritage professional connecting communities with their histories, we would welcome the opportunity to connect.

Rooted Locally. Connected Globally.
Local History Hub's immediate priority remains strengthening our network across the United Kingdom.
LHH International is a complementary, exploratory initiative designed to encourage shared learning, strengthen research connections and bring international perspectives into our work.
Our starting point is simple: local history may be rooted in individual communities, but there is much we can learn from one another.
