Our mission is to make local history a vibrant part of education—relevant, accessible, and rooted in the stories that matter most to the people and places we serve.

  • Local History Hub welcomes schools, historical sites, community organisations, local authorities, and heritage professionals. Anyone passionate about preserving and promoting local history can get involved.

  • We support the creation of teacher-led Local History Hubs across the UK. Each Hub brings together schools, historical sites, and community partners to develop projects, events, and resources that make local history meaningful and accessible. Hubs are led by local volunteers—typically a School Lead and a Community Lead—who coordinate activity and foster connections in their area.

For Schools & Educators

  • Schools can join their local Hub to access curriculum-linked resources, connect with historical sites, and take part in community-driven projects. Opportunities include:

    • Participating in events like Local History Day (Wednesday 22nd April 2026)

For Historical Sites

  • Historical sites can join a Local History Hub by connecting with schools, offering visits and workshops, contributing to events like Local History Day, and collaborating on local projects.
    It’s a flexible way to support education, share expertise, and bring community history to life.

  • There are no strict requirements. We welcome museums, heritage centres, and historic landmarks that are willing to collaborate with schools and community groups.

  • Local History Hub facilitates introductions between schools and historical sites. Sites can also attend hub meetings to discuss partnership opportunities.

For Community Members & Volunteers

  • A Community Lead helps build relationships between schools, historical sites, and local organisations. They promote local heritage, organise events, and coordinate hub activities.

  • Community members can:

    • Volunteer as a Hub Lead to organise history-related events.

    • Assist in educational outreach, such as storytelling or workshops.

  • We support all volunteers—including Community and Schools Leads—with resources, guidance, and a national network.

For Local Authorities & Partners

  • Local authorities play a key role by:

    • Supporting the establishment of Local History Hubs.

    • Encouraging schools and community groups to participate.

  • No, Local History Hub is a not-for-profit initiative. Participation is based on mutual contribution rather than membership fees.

  • Organisations can:

    • Co-host heritage events and exhibitions.

    • Support public outreach efforts through sponsorship or networking.

Practical Details
