Local History Hub Newark brings together schools, heritage organisations, and community partners to support high-quality, place-based history across Newark and the surrounding area. The hub helps children and young people explore the people, places, and stories that have shaped their communities, strengthening their understanding of the past and connection to where they live.
The hub operates as a local working party, meeting regularly to strengthen and support local history provision through collaboration. By bringing together teachers, heritage professionals, and community organisations, it creates a space to share expertise, develop practical approaches, and build stronger connections between local heritage and the classroom.
Through curriculum support, partnership working, and local storytelling, the hub aims to make Newark’s rich history more accessible and meaningful for all learners.

Our Team

Denise Greany is Learning and Participation Manager for Heritage and Culture at Newark and Sherwood District Council, working across The Palace Theatre, the National Civil War Centre, Newark Museum and Newark Castle. Beginning her career as a secondary school and advisory teacher in Oxfordshire, Denise later worked as a Literacy Consultant in the London Borough of Hackney before moving into the heritage sector with Access Artefacts in Nottingham. Since joining the National Civil War Centre in 2014, Denise has developed formal and informal learning programmes for schools, families and community audiences. She is passionate about the power of heritage organisations to bring learning to life, foster a sense of place, and support community cohesion and wellbeing. As lead for Newark's new Local History Hub, Denise is committed to helping people discover, share and celebrate the rich history of Newark and Sherwood.
