Teacher-led, grassroots, and rooted in belonging.

Local History Hub York brings together schools, heritage organisations and community partners to support high-quality, place-based history across the city. The hub helps children explore the people, places and stories that have shaped York, strengthening local pride and a sense of connection to where they live.

Through curriculum support, collaborative projects and local storytelling, the hub makes it easier for schools and communities to work together and celebrate York’s rich and diverse heritage.

Meet the Team

  • Dr Ruth Mather

    COMMUNITY LEAD

Dr Ruth Mather is the Community Engagement Officer at All Saints North Street, York, where she co-ordinates heritage outreach and schools programming. She has worked extensively with local history groups and with schools on a range of projects, covering themes including working class and women’s history as well as the medieval heritage of All Saints North Street. She is passionate about ensuring that all children and young people are offered the opportunity to learn about history in a way that is relevant and meaningful for them, and believes that local history study has the potential to connect learners to a deeper understanding of their communities and the development of a sense of place.
