WELCOME TO LOCAL HISTORY HUB
Teacher-led, grassroots, and rooted in belonging.
Connecting schools and communities through local history.
Who We Are
At Local History Hub, we believe local history belongs in every classroom.
We’re a new, teacher-led initiative with a big ambition: to change how local history is taught and celebrated in primary schools across the United Kingdom. As a grassroots movement of educators, we thrive on networking and collaboration, connecting teachers to one another and to their communities
History isn’t just about dates and facts, it’s about people, places, and the stories that shape our communities. That’s why we’re building a national network of Local History Hubs, each shaped by a working party of passionate educators and rooted in real connections between schools, heritage sites, and local communities. What We Do
At Local History Hub, we believe that history is most powerful when it starts close to home. That’s why every Hub is built by teachers, shaped by local stories, and sustained through real collaboration.
What a Local History Hub Does
Each Local History Hub brings together schools, heritage organisations, and communities to explore the past where it matters most—locally.
Every Hub is led by educators and developed through a working party of local teachers, ensuring it responds to the needs of real classrooms and reflects the unique heritage of the area.
Together, Hubs:
Help schools embed local history in the curriculum in meaningful, creative ways
Build partnerships with museums, archives, and community groups
Celebrate local identity through shared projects and events
Share ideas, tools, and best practice across a growing UK-wide network
Local History Hub is an early-stage, grassroots initiative with big ambitions. We’re currently piloting a growing network of teacher-led Hubs across the UK, supporting educators to lead the way in making local history more engaging, accessible, and meaningful. Through these Hubs, we:
Support Schools & Educators
We support teachers to lead the way—offering curriculum-linked resources, collaborative working party models, and school-based projects like Our Homes, Our Stories.
Connect Communities & Heritage
We help schools build partnerships with local museums, archives, and heritage groups — ensuring that local stories are preserved and passed on to the next generation.
Host Inspiring Events
From Local History Day to collaborative projects and workshops, we create opportunities for schools and communities to come together to explore the past in new and exciting ways.
Share Resources & Best Practice
We’re developing a national library of shared resources—from lesson plans and case studies to community project ideas—co-created by teachers and heritage partners across the UK.
Our Hubs
Local History Hub is building a UK-wide network of teacher-led hubs - each one rooted in local stories, shaped by schools, and sustained through collaboration between educators, heritage partners and communities.
Explore the map below to discover where our hubs are based and learn more about each one.
Current & Pilot Hubs
These hubs are already active, connecting schools and communities across their regions:
Cardiff – Working with schools and partners to explore Welsh history and identity.
Liverpool – Celebrating the city’s diverse past through classroom projects and community storytelling.
Blackburn with Darwen – Building strong links between schools, museums and local heritage.
Cheshire West & Chester – Supporting schools to integrate local history into the curriculum.
Derby – Strengthening community engagement and classroom practice through local stories.
Future Hubs (Launching from September 2026)
We’re growing our network with new hubs currently in development:
Leicester – Supported by Leicester City Council. Community engagement is led by Rachel Ayrton (Leicester Museums & Galleries), and we are seeking a Schools Hub Lead.
Wiltshire – Supported by Wiltshire Council. We’re recruiting volunteer Schools and Community Hub Leads to help shape this new county-wide partnership
Each hub - whether established or in development - shares a single goal: to help schools bring local history to life, strengthen community connections, and celebrate a shared sense of place.
