Becoming a Schools Lead is a unique opportunity to play a key role in a growing, teacher-led movement to embed local history in schools and communities across the UK.

You’ll help shape something new, from the ground up, while gaining leadership experience, building professional networks, and supporting your school and others to deliver meaningful, place-based learning.

This voluntary role gives you freedom, autonomy, and real impact. It’s ideal for teachers with a passion for local history, a flair for collaboration, and a desire to lead on something exciting, relevant, and lasting.

Your Role As A Schools Lead

As a Schools Lead, you will:

  • Lead the creation of a teacher-led Local History Hub in your area

  • Organise and host termly hub meetings to share ideas, resources, and best practice

  • Build connections with other schools, heritage sites, and local historians

  • Coordinate planning for Local History Day and other shared events

  • Champion curriculum integration through initiatives like Our Homes, Our Stories

  • Promote inclusive, place-based learning that builds cultural capital and community pride

You won’t be working alone—our wider network and support team will be with you every step of the way.

We’re here to help you make your Hub a success. As a Schools Lead, you’ll receive:

  • A bank of curriculum-linked resources, including assembly templates, meeting pro-forma’s and progression ladders

  • Ongoing support from our Network Support Team

  • Collaboration opportunities with Community Leads, Regional Heritage Advisors, and National Heritage Advisors

  • Help growing your Hub and connecting with local schools and heritage partners

  • Guidance on planning events, leading meetings, and developing your Hub’s identity

  • A custom web page to showcase your Hub’s work and share updates

Whether you’re new to leadership or already an experienced middle/senior leader, this role offers hands-on experience and a chance to leave a lasting legacy in your community.
