Local History Hub is a teacher-led, grassroots initiative, rooted in belonging. We are building a national network of school-led hubs that connect educators, heritage partners, and communities to explore and celebrate the history of place. to explore and celebrate the history of the places they live.

As a start-up in its pilot phase, we’re already working across five local authority areas — Blackburn with Darwen, Cardiff, Cheshire West & Chester, Derby, and Liverpool — and we’re committed to developing strong, flexible partnerships with councils across the UK.

We believe local authorities have a vital role to play in supporting place-based education, building civic pride, and helping schools connect with the rich heritage on their doorstep.

Why Work With Us

Local History Hub offers a practical, scalable model for bringing local history into classrooms and communities. The greatest value of our model lies in the regular collaboration and CPD that emerge from teacher-led working parties. A key benefit of this collaboration is connecting teachers, who may not have specialist heritage knowledge, with local heritage professionals, and enabling heritage professionals to engage directly with schools and the curriculum. This two-way exchange builds confidence, widens expertise, and strengthens relationships between education and heritage.

By working with us, local authorities can:

  • Support cultural capital and curriculum enrichment in primary education

  • Strengthen connections between schools and local museums, archives, and historical sites

  • Promote civic identity and community cohesion through shared history

  • Contribute to broader outcomes in education, heritage, and community engagement

Our Hubs are run by teachers who understand the needs of their pupils and communities. We work in partnership, not as a top-down provider, but as a network that responds to local context, priorities, and opportunities.

For more information about how the partnership works, what we offer, and how to get involved, download our Local Authority Welcome Pack below:

This pack includes a detailed overview of our approach, partnership structure, and the simple steps to setting up a Hub in your area.

Free To Join

There is no cost for local authorities, MATs or heritage organisations to join Local History Hub. We are a teacher-led, grassroots start-up committed to making local history accessible for all schools.

A Collaborative Approach

We welcome interest from:

  • Local education teams supporting curriculum innovation and school improvement

  • Heritage and culture departments aiming to widen engagement

  • Community teams focused on outreach, participation, and local pride

We recognise the constraints that local authorities are under in terms of time and capacity. There is no expectation that you dedicate a staff member to a Hub, though of course, this is always welcome if possible.

Whether you're ready to co-develop a new Hub, share existing opportunities with schools, or simply explore how our model could work in your area, we’d love to hear from you.

Together, we can build a stronger connection between schools, communities, and the history that shapes them.
