A New Local History Hub for Essex
We’re delighted to announce the launch of Local History Hub Essex, the latest addition to our growing UK-wide network and the first hub in the East of England. Local History Hub is a teacher-led, grassroots movement that brings together schools, heritage organisations, and community partners to make local history meaningful and accessible for children and young people. Each hub is built collaboratively, with the shared aim of enriching curriculum learning, strengthening local identity, and fostering a sense of place and belonging.
Exploring Essex’s Rich and Varied Heritage
Local History Hub Essex will support schools and communities to explore the county’s diverse history, from coastal and maritime heritage to market towns, rural communities, and stories of migration and change. The hub will help pupils understand how the past continues to shape the places they live, encouraging curiosity and a deeper connection to their surroundings.
Through curriculum support, collaborative projects, and local storytelling, the hub will make it easier for schools and heritage partners to work together and bring Essex’s history to life in ways that feel relevant and engaging for learners.
Meet the Community Lead
Local History Hub Essex is supported by Julie Pugh, Learning and Participation Officer at English Heritage, covering the East of England. Julie works closely with schools across a range of historic sites in East Anglia, supporting curriculum-linked visits and projects that connect pupils with local heritage.
Before moving into the heritage sector, Julie worked as a special needs teacher. She is passionate about making local history accessible to all learners and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to engage meaningfully with the stories of the places where they live.
