A thank you following Local History Day 2026

I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who took part in Local History Day 2026.

Across the UK, it has been encouraging to see the range of ways schools and organisations have engaged with local history. From classroom enquiries and assemblies to work linked with local heritage sites, there has been a clear sense of thought and care in how the day has been approached.

Pupils have explored the stories, people and sites that shape their local area, often drawing on their own experiences and those of their communities. In many cases, this has been supported by partnerships with museums, archives and other heritage organisations.

I also recognise that not every school will have marked the day itself. Many will be continuing this work over the coming weeks, and that is very much part of the intention. Local History Day is designed to be flexible, and to fit within the realities of school life.

Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing some of the examples we have seen. This will include pupils’ work, classroom approaches and wider projects, with the aim of celebrating what has been done and offering ideas that others may find useful.

Thank you again for your involvement and support. It has been an important step in building a shared approach to local history, shaped by teachers and grounded in the communities they serve.
