A New Local History Hub for Rotherham

We’re delighted to announce the launch of Local History Hub Rotherham, the latest addition to our growing UK-wide network. Local History Hub is a teacher-led, grassroots movement that brings together schools, heritage organisations, and community partners to make local history meaningful and accessible for children and young people. Each hub is built collaboratively, with the shared aim of enriching curriculum learning, strengthening local identity, and fostering a sense of place and belonging.

Exploring Rotherham’s Industrial and Community Heritage

Local History Hub Rotherham will support schools and communities to explore the borough’s rich and varied past, from its industrial heritage and working communities to the everyday stories of the people who have shaped the area over time. The hub will help pupils understand how history continues to influence the places they live, encouraging curiosity and a deeper connection to their local area.

Through curriculum support, collaborative projects, and local storytelling, the hub will make it easier for schools and heritage partners to work together and bring Rotherham’s history to life in ways that feel relevant and engaging for learners.

Meet the Community Lead

Local History Hub Rotherham is led by Ian Blakesley, Learning Officer at Rotherham Museum.

Ian brings over 25 years’ experience in education, having worked in both primary schools and special educational needs settings, finishing his teaching career as an assistant headteacher. Since moving into the heritage sector, he has worked delivering museum education sessions and at a prehistoric cave site, before taking up his current role.

He is passionate about uncovering local stories and working with schools to bring these to life. Through his work at Rotherham Museum, he supports access to local collections and archives, helping pupils connect with the history of their area in meaningful and engaging ways.

Get Involved

We’re now inviting teachers, schools, heritage organisations, and community groups across Rotherham to get involved as the hub develops.
