A New Local History Hub for Mid Hampshire

We're delighted to announce the launch of Local History Hub Mid Hampshire, the latest addition to our growing network of teacher-led local history partnerships across England and Wales.

Local History Hub is a grassroots initiative that brings together schools, heritage organisations, museums, archives, and local communities to strengthen local history education. Through practical collaboration, hubs help children develop a deeper understanding of place, identity, and belonging while supporting schools to deliver engaging, curriculum-linked local history.

Exploring Mid Hampshire's Rich Local History

Mid Hampshire is home to a fascinating and diverse heritage, from historic market towns and rural communities to industrial innovation, transport history, agriculture, and military heritage.

Local History Hub Mid Hampshire will help schools connect with the stories, people, places, and landscapes that have shaped the area over time. By exploring local history, children can develop a stronger understanding of how national events and wider historical themes are reflected in the communities where they live.

The hub aims to support schools in making meaningful use of local heritage, helping pupils build stronger connections to their local area while developing historical knowledge and enquiry skills.

Connecting Schools and Heritage Organisations Across Mid Hampshire

The hub is currently supported by Dan Ball of the Watercress Line, who will act as Community Hub Lead.

The Watercress Line is one of Hampshire's best-known heritage attractions and has a long-standing commitment to education and community engagement. Through Dan's support, the hub will help strengthen connections between schools and the area's museums, archives, historic sites, heritage organisations, and community groups.

As the hub develops, it will provide opportunities for schools to share good practice, discover local history resources, and build relationships with organisations that can support curriculum learning.

Seeking a Schools Hub Lead

We are currently looking for a volunteer Schools Hub Lead to help shape and develop Local History Hub Mid Hampshire.

The role is designed for a teacher, history subject leader, senior leader, or education professional who is passionate about local history and interested in bringing schools together around a shared sense of place and belonging.

Schools Hub Leads work alongside Community Hub Leads to support communication, encourage participation, and help identify local priorities. The role is flexible, voluntary, and designed to fit around existing professional commitments.

If you would like to learn more about becoming the Schools Hub Lead for Mid Hampshire, we would love to hear from you.

We are now inviting teachers, schools, museums, archives, heritage organisations, and community groups across Mid Hampshire to get involved.

Whether you would like to help shape the hub, share expertise, develop local history opportunities, or simply stay informed as plans progress, we would be delighted to hear from you.
