A New Local History Hub for West Northumberland

We’re delighted to announce the launch of Local History Hub West Northumberland, the latest addition to our growing UK-wide network. Local History Hub is a teacher-led, grassroots movement that brings together schools, heritage organisations, and community partners to make local history meaningful and accessible for children and young people. Each hub is built collaboratively, with the shared aim of enriching curriculum learning, strengthening local identity, and fostering a sense of place and belonging.

Exploring West Northumberland’s Landscapes, Communities, and Heritage

Local History Hub West Northumberland will support schools and communities to explore the area’s rich and distinctive history, from rural communities and border heritage to mining, agriculture, transport, and everyday local life. The hub will help pupils understand how the past continues to shape the places where they live, encouraging curiosity and a deeper connection to local communities.

Through curriculum support, collaborative projects, and local storytelling, the hub will make it easier for schools and heritage partners to work together and bring West Northumberland’s history to life in ways that feel relevant and engaging for learners.

Meet the Team

Local History Hub West Northumberland is led by Sophie Bell (Community Lead) and Lee Ferris (Schools Lead).

Sophie is a Learning and Participation Officer at English Heritage, working across sites along Hadrian’s Wall and supporting young people to connect meaningfully with local heritage and history.

Lee is Headteacher of Kielder Primary School, England’s most remote primary school. Passionate about knowledge-rich, place-based learning, he is committed to helping children develop a strong understanding of their community, landscape, and local past.

Get Involved

We’re now inviting teachers, schools, heritage organisations, and community groups across West Northumberland to get involved as the hub develops.

If you’d like to help shape the hub, contribute to future projects, or simply stay informed as plans progress, please complete our short Expression of Interest form.
Alternatively, you can contact us directly at enquiries@localhistoryhub.org.uk.

We’re also keen to hear from anyone interested in supporting or developing a wider Northumberland Local History Hub network. Schools and organisations from elsewhere in Northumberland are very welcome to complete the general Northumberland Expression of Interest form to register interest and help shape future plans.

Together, we’re helping children and communities across Northumberland connect with the stories that shape where they live.
