A New Local History Hub for York
We’re delighted to announce the launch of Local History Hub York, the latest addition to our growing UK-wide network. Local History Hub is a teacher-led, grassroots movement that brings together schools, heritage organisations, and community partners to make local history meaningful, relevant, and accessible for children and young people. Each hub is built collaboratively, with the shared aim of enriching curriculum learning, strengthening local identity, and fostering a strong sense of place and belonging.
Exploring York’s Rich and Diverse Heritage
Local History Hub York will support high-quality, place-based history across the city, helping children explore the people, places, and stories that have shaped York over time. From its medieval heritage to working-class histories, women’s histories, and community stories, the hub will encourage pupils to see their city as a living historical landscape.
Through curriculum support, collaborative projects, and local storytelling, the hub will make it easier for schools and communities to work together, share expertise, and celebrate York’s rich and diverse heritage in ways that resonate with learners today.
Meet the Community Lead
Local History Hub York is led by Dr Ruth Mather, Community Engagement Officer at All Saints North Street. In her role, Ruth coordinates heritage outreach and schools programming and has worked extensively with local history groups and schools across York.
Her work has spanned a wide range of themes, including working-class history, women’s history, and the medieval heritage of All Saints North Street. Ruth is passionate about ensuring that all children and young people have opportunities to engage with history in ways that feel relevant and meaningful to their lives. She strongly believes that local history can help learners develop a deeper understanding of their communities and a stronger sense of place.
Get Involved
We’re now building the partnerships that will support this exciting new chapter for Local History Hub York.
We’re keen to hear from schools, teachers, and heritage organisations across York who would like to be involved, whether as partner organisations, collaborators, or supporters as the hub develops.
The easiest way to get involved is to complete our short Expression of Interest form. It only takes a few minutes and helps us understand how you’d like to be part of the hub’s journey.
Alternatively, you can contact us directly at enquiries@localhistoryhub.org.uk.
Together, we’re helping children and communities across York connect with the stories that shape where they live.
