A New Local History Hub for Leicester
We’re delighted to announce that a brand-new Local History Hub is being established in Leicester, creating exciting new opportunities for schools, heritage organisations, and community groups to come together and explore the stories that shape the city.
Supported by Leicester City Council, the new hub will form part of our growing UK-wide network - a teacher-led, grassroots movement connecting classrooms with the people, places, and events that make local history meaningful. Each hub is built collaboratively by schools, heritage partners, and community organisations, with the aim of enriching the curriculum, strengthening community identity, and celebrating a shared sense of place.
A City-Wide Collaboration
The Leicester Hub will bring together schools, museums, archives, and local history groups from across the city to explore Leicester’s rich and diverse heritage — from Roman settlement and medieval trade to stories of migration, industry, activism, and everyday life.
The hub is being developed in partnership with Leicester Museums & Galleries, part of Leicester City Council. Rachel Ayrton, from the museums team, will take on the role of Community Hub Lead, drawing on her extensive experience connecting heritage organisations and education settings across the city.
Seeking a Schools Hub Lead
To complete the leadership team, we’re now looking for a volunteer Schools Hub Lead - ideally a classroom teacher, subject leader, or educator with a passion for local history and place-based learning.
Working alongside Rachel and the Local History Hub team, the Schools Hub Lead will:
Support teachers and schools to embed local history into the curriculum
Help shape collaborative classroom projects and shared resources
Lead a working party of educators to guide the hub’s development
Champion the power of local stories in primary education
This is a flexible, voluntary role (around 2–3 hours per month) and an exciting opportunity to play a key part in a city-wide project that will make local history more engaging, accessible, and meaningful for pupils across Leicester.
Get Involved
Whether you’re a teacher, part of a local history group, or involved in a museum, archive, or cultural project, we’d love you to be part of this new chapter for Leicester.
